Scotland March 2025

5th July 2025
Cairngorms
Donation to The Polar Academy Charity

Our 2025 Scotland March, will be our second march north of the wall. The original march was started by Jake Best in Dorset as a charity fundraising social event under the name "It's Going to get Hairy".  Since inception, the event has grown in mass seeing up to 300 people attending the event. Each year, the event partners with a lead charity which the marchers will raise funds for. Nomad has always supported the march in Dorset which led to the conversation around bringing it to Scotland in order to grow the community.

In 2025, we will be partnering with The Polar Academy.

The Polar Academy is a Scottish teenage mental health charity dedicated to transforming the lives of young people through incredible polar expeditions.

What they do and who they work with:

  • Identify struggling 13–17-year-old school pupils who suffer from poor mental health or low self-esteem. They look for the shy awkward young people that struggle with their confidence or find it hard to fit in. They may be victims of bullying, have anxiety, depression or have suffered a bereavement.

  • Deliver a long-term intervention to 30 pupils each year, mainly in the form of a 12-month intensive physical training programme. This culminates in a 10-day winter sledge hauling expedition to East Greenland for 20 participants each year.

  • Science forms an important part of any polar expedition. TPA are working with a geologist who has created STEM field studies opportunities in both winter and summer for their young people and they are partnered with Oxford, Cambridge and St Andrews Universities and the Scott Polar Research Institute. The young people are given the incredible opportunity to visit and deliver lecturers on all field science undertaken.

The purpose of The Polar Academy:

  • The aim of TPA is to break the negative spiral that these children have found themselves on by giving them positive goals. Parents, siblings, and school staff are also actively involved through joining in with weekly training sessions and supporting their young people throughout the year. Involvement and support of family and the school are a key part of our ethos. This not only helps them to better understand what their children are going through but also strengthens family relationships, which has a lasting positive impact on them all.

  • The training quickly improves their physical fitness and the focus on this, and the setting of goals, starts to rebuild their confidence and improve their mental health. The young people also quickly form friendships with each other and bond as a team. These positive relationships are vital to improving their wellbeing.

  • Upon their return to Scotland each pupil is tasked with giving something back to their community by giving talks to others about their experience. Public speaking at other schools and events helps the young people to further develop their confidence and become true role models to their peers.

It costs circa £25k for each youngster to go through the programme and take part in the Arctic expedition. The Polar Academy’s work is fully funded through the generous support of Charitable Trusts, Foundations, Patrons, Corporate Partners and a range of fundraising activity and events.

Supporting The Polar Academy means more than a financial contribution, it’s an investment in the next generation. By joining forces with the Polar Academy, businesses can contribute to a program that instils confidence and resilience in young people, many of whom are facing personal struggles. Whether through direct sponsorship, volunteering time, or helping with event logistics, businesses can play a vital role in sustaining this incredible initiative.

The March will be held in the Cairngorm National Park with a route that will span over 24 miles and see us taking in the 2nd and 6th highest mountains in the UK.

This booking is for the MARCH ONLY. This is a free event however we would like you to consider a donation to the charity.
